Menan, Idaho, is a small town in Jefferson County. It was the first settlement of Latter-day Saints in the Snake River Valley, and according to local history, was named “Menan,” as it’s the Indian word for “island.” It currently has a population of around 715. 

Menan is most famous for its large 4th of July celebration, which includes a parade, games, food, a duck race, a 5K run, a car show, fireworks, and other fun activities for residents of all ages. Every year, thousands of people come to this area to enjoy the festivities. 

If you want to get some exercise, consider hiking the Twin Menan Buttes, which are the only volcanic eruptions that occurred in freshwater in the United States. The trail is three miles to the top, around the rim, and back down. The area is home to an abundance of wildlife, including deer, rabbits, and birds.

Menan sits only seven miles from Jefferson County Lake, which provides opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming. There’s also a lake slide, volleyball nets, a playground, and picnic tables. If you’re visiting the area, you can reserve one of the 50 campsites.
