Who We Are
Big Foot Heating & Cooling Services
In 2007, Big Foot Heating & Cooling owner Charles Fife decided he wanted to work for himself and began CRF Mechanical. In this new role, he was committed to providing more reliable, better-value HVAC services to homeowners across St. Anthony, Idaho Falls, and beyond. This company provided homeowners across the area with reliable HVAC maintenance, repair, and installation. With his commitment to quality services, he quickly needed to expand the team. In 2015, Charles hired his first employee, and by the end of the year, the company was renamed Big Foot Heating & Cooling. Although the name has changed, our commitment has stayed the same: providing high-quality, reliable HVAC services to properties across Eastern Idaho.

-
How often should I service my HVAC system?
Our team recommends servicing your HVAC systems at least once a year, although twice is best. You’ll want to schedule AC service in the spring and furnace service in the fall. In Idaho Falls, where seasonal extremes are common, regular maintenance ensures your systems run efficiently during hot summers and freezing winters. Routine checkups can extend the life of your equipment, lower your energy bills, and prevent costly breakdowns. Our local technicians understand the specific demands Idaho Falls weather places on HVAC systems and can help keep yours in top shape year-round.
-
What size HVAC system do I need for my home?
Choosing the right size HVAC system depends on several factors, including your home’s square footage, insulation quality, ceiling height, and number of windows. In Idaho Falls, climate also plays a big role. A system that’s too small won’t keep up during harsh winters, while one that’s too large may short-cycle and waste energy. Our HVAC professionals perform a load calculation to determine the perfect size system for your home, ensuring comfort and efficiency tailored to Idaho Falls’ climate conditions. A properly sized unit improves performance, reduces wear and tear, and saves you money over time.
-
Why is my energy bill so high in the winter?
High winter energy bills are common in Idaho Falls due to the long, cold season. If your HVAC system is older, poorly maintained, or inefficient, it may struggle to keep up with the demand. Leaky ductwork, poor insulation, or an outdated thermostat can also contribute to energy waste. We offer energy audits to help identify problem areas and suggest upgrades like high-efficiency furnaces or smart thermostats. Regular maintenance can also improve your system’s efficiency. Reducing your energy bills starts with a comprehensive approach that addresses both your HVAC system and your home’s overall energy use.
-
How long does a typical HVAC system last?
Most HVAC systems last between 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. However, Idaho Falls’ fluctuating temperatures can cause added wear on heating and cooling units, especially if they’re overworked or under-serviced. Regular tune-ups and filter changes can extend your system’s lifespan. If your unit is nearing the 15-year mark, making unusual noises, or not heating or cooling effectively, it may be time to consider a replacement. Our Idaho Falls HVAC technicians can assess your system’s condition and help you weigh the cost of repairs versus the benefits of upgrading to a newer, more efficient model.
-
What are the benefits of a programmable or smart thermostat?
Programmable and smart thermostats offer better temperature control and energy savings, which are especially helpful during Idaho Falls’ hot summers and cold winters. These devices let you schedule temperature changes to match your daily routine so your system doesn’t work harder than it needs to when you’re not home. Smart thermostats can even learn your habits and adjust automatically. Some models allow remote control via smartphone, which is convenient during vacations or unexpected weather changes. Installing one can significantly lower your energy bills while improving comfort throughout your Idaho Falls home.
-
Can you help with indoor air quality in my home?
Absolutely. Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a growing concern, especially in tightly sealed homes where dust, allergens, and pollutants can accumulate. In Idaho Falls, where winter often keeps windows closed for months, fresh air circulation is limited. We offer a range of IAQ solutions, including air purifiers, humidifiers, and high-efficiency filters. These systems help reduce allergens, balance humidity, and eliminate harmful particles. Our HVAC professionals can assess your home’s air quality and recommend options to keep your indoor environment healthy and comfortable year-round.
