Roberts, Idaho, is a small rural town in the heart of Jefferson County. It was named in honor of H.A. Roberts, an official with the Oregon Short Line Railroad. Roberts has a rich agricultural heritage, as farming and ranching are the town’s primary industries. Though it has grown into a peaceful suburb, locals haven’t forgotten the resilience and determination of early settlers. Roberts currently has a population of around 500.  

If you enjoy birdwatching, consider stopping by Market Lake Wildlife Management Area. This location was established in 1956 to restore a portion of Market Lake for migrating and breeding waterfowl. Here you can view over 180 bird species, as well as spot wildlife (such as mule and white-tailed deer), hunt waterfowl, and go fishing. 

Roberts also sits close to the Menan Buttes, two of the world’s largest volcanic tuff cones. To get some exercise out in nature, you can hike the North Menan Butte Trail. This 3.1-mile out-and-back trail is steep and rocky, but once you get to the top, you’ll feel like you’re standing on the edge of a crater.
